How much food should you send for dog boarding?

The safest approach is to pack enough food for every scheduled meal, plus a small extra amount in case your pickup is delayed. If your dog eats twice a day and will stay for five nights, you will usually need around ten meals, depending on drop-off and pickup times.

If your dog has a sensitive stomach, do not rely on the kennel's house food unless you have already discussed it with them. Sending your dog's regular food helps keep their routine stable and may reduce stomach upset during the stay.

Simple rule for packing dog food

Number of meals × portion per meal + 1 or 2 backup meals

Example: 8 meals × 1 cup = 8 cups. Add 2 backup meals = 10 cups total.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra food should I send to a kennel?

One or two extra meals is usually enough for a short stay. For longer trips, consider sending an extra full day of food.

Should I pre-measure dog food for boarding?

Yes. Pre-measured meals make feeding easier for kennel staff and reduce the chance of overfeeding or underfeeding.

Can I send wet food for dog boarding?

Yes, but label each can, pouch, or container clearly. Include storage instructions if the food needs refrigeration.
